Habitat for Humanity builds simple, but adequate houses for those currently living in substandard conditions and whose level of income does not enable them to qualify
for a commercial home loan.  Houses are built largely with volunteer labor and are
sold with no-interest loans to qualified persons at cost.

Garrett Lakes Arts Festival presents a repertoire of high quality performing arts and
arts education that appeals to diverse tastes, is affordable, and is suitable for all
ages. 
A major thrust is exposure to the performing arts for young people through seminars, workshops, camps and trips.  United Way funding allows GLAF to provide bussing and reduced tickets for senior citizens and free arts opportunities for needy families of Garrett County.

  Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.   The current programs available in Garrett County are Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, and Senior Girl Scout troops.   We also welcome new groups of girls and parents to start their own troops.  We offer training for this along with monthly leaders' meetings.  Most funds for our activities are generated through our annual Nut sale in the fall and the Cookie sale in the winter.

The Maryland Salem Children’s Trust offers a family, home and education to children
in need.  Residential services provide a home as long as it’s needed to those who
can’t live with their families.  The Salem Shelter is designed to provide a safe,
nurturing and highly structured temporary placement (up to sixty days) for children
in crisis or transition.  At the Salem School students who have struggled to succeed
in public school find their academic, behavioral and social skills strengthened so that
they can successfully return to public school, willing and able to obtain a diploma,
make a living and contribute to society.  Therapeutic riding programs through the
Salem Equestrian Centre are open to  children enrolled in the Salem programs and to
the public through prior arrangement.

The Salvation Army provides emergency assistance to families, the elderly and the disabled.  This assistance includes, but is not limited to, payments on utilities and rent, the provision of food, the provision of clothing, furnishings and household items at little or no cost.  At Christmas, families are assisted with food and with new clothing or toys for their children.  Whenever disaster strikes, Salvation Army mobile canteens and volunteers bring food, clothing, blankets and needed supplies.  Workers comfort victims, provide counseling, help reunite families and provide for basic needs.  The Salvation Army also provides extended services in major disasters involving massive cleanup or reconstruction.
